Summery of Article
The article is about a recent hostage situation that took place in an Algerian gas plant on January 16th. The kidnappers were said to have been militants from Northern Mali, Tunisia, Algeria, Canada, Niger, Mauritania, and Egypt. So far 69 people including 39 foreigners are known to be dead while three others are missing and 785 managed to escape or be freed. The gas plant was a joint venture between Algeria and other foreign countries. The other countries that were affected were France, the UK, Japan, Philippines, Romania, the United States, Norway, and Malaysia.
My Thoughts on it
I think that the people in Algeria should have better security where foreigners are working. With all of the religious unrest in the area over the past few years it would be wise to protect those of other religions that are being threatened. There seem to be many extremist group popping up and most with violent terms of accomplishing their task.
How It relates to The Political Life of Algeria
The article relates to politics since the events have put a strain on allied relations and they're economy. Even though the Algerians didn't organize the attack, whenever things like this happen it puts a strain on the relations with the other countries with the hesitation of not wanting to send more of their people over into more potential danger. The gas plant the was under siege also accounted for 70% of Algeria's national budget which may cause more debt and problems in the government in the future.
